The Iroquois and Their Neighbors
The Iroquois and Their Neighbors advances scholarship on Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) culture, politics, religion, literature, and other aspects of Iroquois life, from the earliest emergence of Iroquois identity through the present. Comprehensive and diverse, the series embraces critical perspectives drawn from anthropology, history, archaeology, literary studies, folklore, and other disciplines, and includes primary documents such as autobiographies and recorded oral narratives. Many volumes consider Iroquois relationships with their non-Indian neighbors and the experiences of other Native American populations from across North America. A major focus of the series has been the efforts of the Iroquois to interpret and reflect upon their own traditions. Syracuse University Press has an active publishing program in Native American studies and seeks quality manuscripts that reflect sound scholarship and offer a substantial contribution to the field. If you are working on a manuscript or have completed one in our field of interest, we encourage you to contact us about your work.

Iroquoia: The Development of a Native World
William Engelbrecht
"A very accessible and plainspoken account of the Iroquois and their homeland. . . . The book’s strength lies in its use of ethnohistory. . . . Engelbrecht’s descriptions of the Iroquois economy, practiced in the throes of what to all appearances was unending strife and warfare, are some of the best available. So too are his depictions of villages and village life, which are based not only on his own field work, but also information gleaned from the most recent, authoritative literature."

The Montaukett Indians of Eastern Long Island
John A. Strong
"Reading John Strong’s narrative, The Montauketts of Eastern Long Island, one is left with a sense of déjà vu. While not as well known to the general public as the Pequots, Potawatomies or the Narragansetts, the Montauketts experienced the same ill-treatment at the hands of white people. . . . Strong’s history gives one a solid feel for the fate of the Montauketts. Another piece of American Indian history has been brought vividly to life."

"Knowing that she is an outsider whose work has won her rare access to places beyond the reservations’ Keep Out signs, she is respectful. Does this person want to wear traditional or contemporary dress? How is the person comfortable posing? The results are portraits with an elegant spareness and realism. Tucker’s efforts have earned her the regard of the people she photographs."
