Essay On Lying To Parents

I believe that lying is not a way of digging oneself out of a hole, but a way of digging in deeper. I face the temptation of lying daily for myriad of reasons. When the trial comes, I try to fight it through. But sheer will can come up short. Sometimes, whether I like it or not, I end up taking option B. And every time I go down that road, I find myself stuck in a much deeper pit. I figured this out the tough way when I decided to lie during my senior year of high school.

The focal point of my senior year of high school was getting accepted at Northwestern. My dad was a student of Northwestern and I felt the responsibility to continue the legacy. And in order to fulfill my duty, I applied to Northwestern but only to receive a letter of rejection. I was utterly disappointed but I had a greater problem to deal with. The bigger issue was that I had failed to keep my promise of making into Northwestern and I had to tell my parents about it. I could not bear to tell the truth so I lied and told them I was on the waiting list. And further on, I assured them that I would get into the school one way or the other. I knew this would only make matters worse, but I was afraid to confront my parents’ disappointed face. I kept their hopes alive and I took comfort in that situation. At the moment, I thought I was digging myself out of an abyss.

After couple weeks, my mom found the letter of rejection in my room and everything went down the toilet. I mean it was just embarrassing, humiliating and agonizing. I remember having a painfully long discussion with my parents in the living room where I was getting stripped of all my pride. My parents were mostly frustrated because I had lied and less anxious about the letter of rejection. Moreover, they already made notifications to people around us saying that I was going to become a wildcat soon. And to make amends for my heinous crime, I had to call everyone I knew to speak the truth. That night, I put myself in an abysmal position, a place that I wish not to be stuck again.

Lying can be a temporary cover up, but not a permanent one. You can put a lid on top of garbage to cover it. But eventually, the malodorous garbage will soon be noticed by its smell. I understand more than anyone how tough it is to face the truth. Nevertheless, lying will not bring peace; it will only cause more problems. Simply put, when you don’t lie, you have nothing to lose. But when you decide to lie, you have everything to lose.
