Cleveland State Admissions Essay

Freshman MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

Students must meet the following three requirements to be admitted:

1. Cumulative high school GPA of 2.3
2. Successful completion of 13 core academic requirements:

  • 4 years/units of English
  • 3 years/units of Math
  • 3 years/units of Natural Sciences
  • 3 years/units of Social Sciences

Students graduating from an Ohio public or chartered high school in 2014 and
beyond must complete the Ohio Core Curriculum Requirements, which include:

  • 4 years/units of English
  • 4 years/units of Math, including Algebra II or an equivalent course
  • 3 years/units of Science
  • 3 years/units of Social Studies
  • 1 year/unit of Fine Arts, to include courses taken in grades 7-12

3. ACT score of 16 or SAT score of 770 (combined critical reading and math). Cleveland State reviews the writing and essay sections of the ACT and SAT but is not currently using these scores in the admission process.

ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIFIC COLLEGES

Some academic programs have more selective admission requirements that exceed the minimum admission requirements stated above.

College of Education and Human Services
Non-Licensure Programs: 2.5 GPA and 20 ACT (950 combined critical reading and math SAT)
Licensure Programs: Please contact the Advising Office for more information on specific requirements

Washkewicz College of Engineering
2.7 GPA and 23 ACT (1070 combined critical reading and math SAT)
Note: For the Department of Engineering Technology the university minimum admission requirements apply.

School of Nursing
Students must be admitted to Cleveland State as Pre-Nursing and then follow the School of Nursing admission process.

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences - Department of Music
Music students must complete an additional application and complete an audition. Students who have not completed a music theory course for college credit are also required to complete an oral and written placement exam. Contact the Department of Music for additional information at 216.687.2033.

Transfer Students

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

Transfer applicants must earn at least a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) at all previous colleges and universities combined in order to be admitted to Cleveland State University as a degree-seeking student.

ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIFIC COLLEGES

Some academic programs have more selective admission requirements that exceed the minimum admission requirements stated above. Students not meeting these requirements may be considered for pre-admission into one of our academic colleges. In some circumstances, students may be admitted into University Studies.

College of Education and Human Services:

Washkewicz College of Engineering

  • 2.2 GPA and
  • Grade of C or better in course equivalent to Cleveland State's Math 181, 182; Chemistry 261, 266; Physics 241 or 243; and English 101, 102
  • Note: For the Department of Engineering Technology the University minimum admission requirements apply

incoming freshman

Incoming college freshman applicants should apply midway through their senior year of high school. Deadline for submission of Scholars Program applications for all students is August 1st. If a student misses the lower division deadline, they can apply as a sophomore or junior.

If you have already applied to the Honors Program, there is no need to apply to the Scholars Program since students declined a place in the Honors Program will automatically be considered for the Scholars Program.

Students must meet at least ONE of the following criteria to be considered for the Scholars Program; if the student does not meet one of the criteria the application will not be reviewed.

  • 27 ACT composite score or above, OR
  • Comparable SAT score, OR
  • Rank in the top 15% of their high school class.

Application Checklist for Incoming Freshman

  • Submit a completed Cleveland State University application and all associated materials to the admissions office (acceptance into the University is required before your Scholars application will be reviewed),
  • Submit a completed Scholars Program application to the Mandel Honors College
  • Interview with Scholars advisor (call 216-687-5559 to schedule an interview), OR submit a brief essay (500 words) explaining how participating in the Scholars Program will benefit your academic career.
Current college sophomores and juniors

Any student that has completed a year at CSU or any other accredited University may be considered for the University Scholars Program. Transfer students that apply to the program must be currently enrolled at CSU.

Students must meet all the following requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA from all previous college level work, AND
  • Demonstration that completion of Upper Division Scholars Requirements for individual major is possible (must have at least two academic years left before graduation)

Deadline for submission of Scholars Program applications for all students is August 1st. 

Application Checklist for College Sophomores and Juniors

  • Be a current CSU student OR submit a completed Cleveland State University application and all associated materials to the admissions office (acceptance into the University is required before your Scholars application will be reviewed).
  • Submit a completed Scholars Program application to the Mandel Honors College,
  • Interview with Scholars advisor (call 216-687-5559 to schedule an interview), OR write a brief essay (500 words) explaining how participating in the Scholars Program will benefit your academic career.

** Applicants to the Mandel Honors College must be pursuing their first Bachelor's degree.  Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree are ineligible for consideration.

** Please Note: The Mandel Honors College only admits students to programs once a year for Fall semester.
